Unscrupulous companies create websites that look just like legitimate websites that provide information on finding a job, joining the military, or getting government benefits but in reality, they are not there to help you with any of those things. Instead, they\u2019ll take your personal information and sell it to other companies. Companies that buy your information then try to pitch you products or services you don\u2019t need and didn\u2019t ask for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FTC has reached a settlement <\/a>with Career Education Corporation (CEC).  CEC bought leads from companies that set up sites to attract people looking for things like jobs, and Medicaid information in an effort to collect people\u2019s private information. If you visited any of those sites you then got calls trying to get you to enroll in CEC\u2019s post-secondary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If this sounds familiar, it might be because the FTC has sued several of the website operators before, including Sunkey<\/a>, Edutrek<\/a> and Gigats<\/a>. This time, the case isn\u2019t about generating the leads. Instead, it\u2019s about the company that should have known those leads weren\u2019t legit \u2013 and used them anyway. And, says the FTC, CEC also used telemarketers to make aggressive enrollment pitches \u2013 often to people on the Do Not Call Registry<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
